Spelling City

A few students have asked me if they could have spelling tests in Kindergarten. Although I don't correct spelling or give spelling tests as part of my program, there is a neat website where students can test themselves.

Spelling City is a website that allows you to enter in a spelling list. From there, the program generates online games that help to teach the words.

I promote letter-sound relationships in my classroom, which is why I promote "invented spelling" at this age. However, using "sight words" for this spelling site would benefit the students.

Here is a sample of the sight words we have been working on in class:

New Inquiry Project

Students are excited that we are starting to do some inquiry about plants. This theme is continued throughout the elementary curriculum, and students will have many opportunities to learn about plants in upcoming years.
As with all inquiry, students will guide the direction of our learning. For example, they might be interested in just the roots of a plant. They might be interested what plants we eat. Students might want to explore a specific kind of plant, for example, a sunflower. There are so many possibilities!

Keep checking the website for updates and links!

Spring is Here!

Sorry to all of you who have been coming to the website, but there haven't been new posts!

Time for an update!

We have started a new inquiry project into robins and nests. Students were very interested in learning about robins because of a book we read, called Spring. This week we gathered grass and twigs around the playground so that we could make nests. Each student had a chance to make a nest using clay and dead grass. They did such a great job! (I will post some pictures soon!)

We have also started a new PWIM picture, so we will be busy learning new words and doing a lot of writing.

Students have read 400 hours so far this year! Our classroom goal is 500 hours of reading, so keep up the great work!

500 Hours of Reading - Kindergarten Challenge!

Kindergarten! Our goal is to read 500 hours as a class!
We will keep track of our reading as a class, so make sure you are recording your minutes.
The reason I chose 500 is because we are counting up to 100 days of school, and the other Kindergarten class is doing 30,000 minutes of reading (which is the same as 500 hours).
SO keep on reading! Remember our goal is not about reading a lot of books, but spending time reading and talking about books together.

I will tell you on Monday what our special reward will be when we reach our goal!

Let's Make A Calendar - Goes through the days of the week, what day of the week it is for the current day. The only downfall is that it is an American website, so the holidays on the calendar will be American.
